Carfrae Farm is based at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills in East Lothian, 20 miles East of Edinburgh. The Gibson family have been at Carfrae Farm since 1933. The third generation is now managing the land but with the second generation still very hands on and the fourth generation learning the ropes.
Over the years there have been significant advances in farming practices and different uses of the land through each generation. These changes have been embraced with each generation ensuring care is taken to enhance the farming enterprise.
Carfrae Farm is an area of 830 acres, at its’ core it is arable land producing wheat, barley, oats, oil seed rape and peas. We maintain our historical link with livestock having cows and sheep grazing in the summer and housed in the winter by neighbouring farmers. Alongside these core practices we manage an environmental programme throughout the farm to offer protection to birds & wildlife and to improve & maintain soil structure. Additionally we manage 130 acres of woodland and the Danskine Loch a SSSi area which affords it a protected status due to rare flora and fauna in the area.
As the farm has diversified we have erected a wind turbine so we are now producing our own electricity, installed a biomass boiler fuelled by our timber from the woodland to provide heat and hot water for 7 of the residential properties on the farm. Most recently we have converted 3 of the traditional farm cottages to self-catering cottages offering holiday accommodation and activities around the farm and the local area.
We feel privileged to be the current custodians of this land and we always welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge and experiences with our guests while visiting us.
Beautiful, spacious and clean apartment in a great central location. We loved our stay here! Only a 5 min walk to Princes Street with lots of lovely local restaurants and bars nearby. Was really handy having 2 bathrooms and the living room and bedrooms are so spacious and light! Trudi was very quick at responding to any questions and we would not hesitate to come back again. Would highly recommend to anyone staying in Edinburgh.
It is really the little things that make a big difference with cozy places like Trudi’s. Thoughtful touches like a really, really well organized and put together kitchen, amazing toilet paper, well-thought out bed rooms, an abundance of towels, great blackout curtains, terrific lighting, and awesome communication made this experience really positive for me and my family.
The location, in the heart of Stockbridge right next to the historic Stockbridge market, right down the street from New Town, Old Town, Canonmills, and Dean Village, is outstanding. Wine bars and pubs literally right outside your door but the noise is not an issue at all.
We travelled with the four members of our household, me, my wife and our two children, both under five, and had no issues whatsoever, it was wonderful and we are grateful for Trudi’s support, communication, check-ins, and warmth as a terrific host. We will keep this place in mind when next we are in Stockbridge!
Thank you Trudi!
Everything about the cottage is excellent from the moment you arrive.
The cottage is spotless, set in beautiful grounds and with wonderful views.
The cottage has everything you could possibly want or need.
An easy 40 minute drive to Edinburgh but lots to do closer to home.
Beware of the hares, rabbits and badgers at night on the road to Carfrae, so drive slowly!
We had a truly enjoyable and relaxing stay at the cottage on Carfrae Farm. The cottage is in a secluded and peaceful location with great views (and sunsets!) and there's easy access to nearby villages and the Lammermuir Hills. Beaches in North Berwick and Tyninghame are only 30 mins drive away and Edinburgh is 40 mins.
Trudi is a great host and gave us a warm welcome. She helped to organise a paddle boarding session for us on the nearby Danskine Loch and took us on a guided tour of her farm - both of which are highly recommended!
The beautiful location, the cottage and all the activities made for a great family holiday - and we hope to be back again!
Thank you Trudi!
