Who can ignore the dawn of a new era of travel & hospitality? What felt familiar only a few short months ago has been turned
Carfrae Farm is based at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills in East Lothian, 20 miles East of Edinburgh. The Gibson family have been at Carfrae Farm since 1933. The third generation is now managing the land but with the second generation still very hands on and the fourth generation learning the ropes.
Over the years there have been significant advances in farming practices and different uses of the land through each generation. These changes have been embraced with each generation ensuring care is taken to enhance the farming enterprise.
Carfrae Farm is an area of 830 acres, at its’ core it is arable land producing wheat, barley, oats, oil seed rape and peas. We maintain our historical link with livestock having cows and sheep grazing in the summer and housed in the winter by neighbouring farmers. Alongside these core practices we manage an environmental programme throughout the farm to offer protection to birds & wildlife and to improve & maintain soil structure. Additionally we manage 130 acres of woodland and the Danskine Loch a SSSi area which affords it a protected status due to rare flora and fauna in the area.
As the farm has diversified we have erected a wind turbine so we are now producing our own electricity, installed a biomass boiler fuelled by our timber from the woodland to provide heat and hot water for 7 of the residential properties on the farm. Most recently we have converted 3 of the traditional farm cottages to self-catering cottages offering holiday accommodation and activities around the farm and the local area.
We feel privileged to be the current custodians of this land and we always welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge and experiences with our guests while visiting us.

The apartment is absolutely beautiful, all of my friends really love it and dream that one day we can have our own haha. We spent two nights here and the best part is the sunshine of the living room in the afternoon. The location is great, quiet and private. It seems to take a little while to get to the central old town but it’s fine. I will definitely choose this house again when we traveling in Edinburgh next time.
A group of us (6) stayed just prior to the changes coming in the following Monday.
From the start of the booking to the end Trudi kept us updated with all the relevant information required including check in information on the day. The cottage was in superb condition and extremely clean. Some fantastic views and location for the cottage and was lucky enough to see a shooting star on the Saturday we stayed! Would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay for a getaway or longer.
Trudi has a beautiful property with breathtaking surroundings situated in the gorgeous countryside. We visited in mid September and the fields and woods provided some beautiful walks. Short drive to a nearby Village and town. The house itself is perfectly laid out & presented with everything you need. Trudi also made thoughtful touches personal to our time there. Communication was spot on with advice when needed. We will be back!
This is a beautiful apartment in an excellent location in the heart of the new town. All the facilities in the apartment are very high specification and everything was sparkling clean. The apartment was both airy and spacious whilst at the same time being comfortable and warm. We'd highly reccomend it to other airbnb guests!
Had a lovely couple of nights at the cottage with my husband, in-laws and eight week old son. It was the furthest away from home that we’d been with him (from Glasgow) and it was just perfect. Highlights for me were the views and the amazing bath! We didn’t get much sleep but the bed was extremely comfortable for nighttime feeds and NetFlix. Trudi was an excellent host, was happy to help and very quick to respond.
Specious clean apartment in an excellent location in Edinburgh.
The location of the flat is the best aspect. 5 min from Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parlament.
The apartment is very spacious and clean. The beds were very comfy. Very good communication with the owner. Note that parking needs to be purchased separately.
In short - a perfect Airbnb for some sightseeing in Edinburgh!
