Carfrae Farm, nestled at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills, has been in the Gibson family since 1933. The third generation is now managing the land, but with the second generation still very hands on and the fourth generation learning the ropes.
With an area of 830 acres, at its’ core the farm is arable land producing wheat, barley, oats, oil seed rape and peas. We maintain our historical link with livestock having cows and sheep grazing in the summer and housed in the winter by neighbouring farmers. We also manage an environmental programme throughout the farm to offer protection to birds & wildlife and to improve & maintain soil structure, including 130 acres of woodland and the Danskine Loch, a SSSi area which affords it a protected status due to rare flora and fauna.
As the farm has diversified, we erected a wind turbine to produce our own electricity and installed a biomass boiler which is fuelled by our timber from the woodland to provide heat and hot water for the residential properties on the farm.
In 2018 we converted three traditional farm cottages into luxury self-catering cottages with hot tubs and an outdoor sauna. We work with local activity providers to offer guests unique experiences in the surrounding countryside.
In 2022 we opened Carfrae Farm Shop – a beautiful converted barn bursting with local and Scottish produce. The farm shop was nominated for Best Village Shop in Scotland in the 2024 Countryside Alliance Awards and we were delighted to win “Highly Commended”.
We feel privileged to be the current custodians of this land and we always welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge and experiences with our guests while visiting us.
